What are you thankful for this season? Of all things we might think about, surely relief from
stress is a good thing, and your home can offer
just that—a place to rest, a place to get away,
and a place to relax.
That can be difficult when times are tough,
though, whether we’re short on time, short on energy, or short on luxury items we might want.

we feel about our lives.

what we need,” Spickler says, explaining that
it’s important to surround ourselves, as much
as possible, with a clutter-free environment that invites relaxation.

Spickler cites improved health, reduced stress, and improved family relationships as benefits of a thoughtfully arranged, clean home. Chaos at home or at work, she says, can even decrease productivity, making it difficult to prioritize tasks and get things done.
In addition to using staging for home sales and feng shui for living arrangements, guides such as Don Aslett’s book For Packrats Only: How to Clear Up, Clean Out, and Dejunk Your Life Forever offer tips for getting rid of clutter.
Aslett suggests making regular journeys through your home, getting rid of obvious junk first, and then calculating items to keep by thinking about when you last used each item, when you’ll use it again, and which items you’d keep if you had to move and could take only 500 pounds of stuff with you.
If you feel intimidated by all you have to do to declutter your living space, try this trick: set a timer for 20 minutes. Work until the timer goes off. Repeat every day. You’ll make progress without feeling overwhelmed.
