2. Call your insurance company. Check your policy to see if you have coverage for your particular emergency. Be sure to get a claim number from your provider.
3. Remove your belongings. Water travels in the paths of least resistance. It’s not just in immediate visible places. Look along walls and underneath everything. Carpet can often be salvaged in a clear water damage situation. Be sure to remove all items from the carpet if it’s wet. Furniture can leave stains and rust spots on carpet.
Be prepared. Know where your main water shut off valve is before an emergency happens. According to acmehowto.com, if a pipe or hot water heater bursts, an extra two minute delay can result in 30 or more gallons of spilled water. That is roughly the equivalent of a bathtub full of water. That much water inside your home can cause a lot of damage. Being able to find the shut off valve and a wrench quickly can save you thousands of dollars of damage.
NOTE: Use caution in the event that you have a sewage backup or overflow. Raw sewage is full of bacteria and should be handled by a professional.
