Get Planting. The Time is Now! AmeriClean Newsletter - February & March 2009
Winter can be a gardener’s best friend. Although it’s not likely that you’ll get outside and plant, it’s a great time to start seeds indoors. And, of course, indoor plants are always in season.
Why not start with wheatgrass? It may sound exotic, but it’s easy and quick to grow. After just two weeks or less, you’ll reap a quick harvest—then you can make juice.
At www.wheatgrasskits.com, you’ll find juicers, growing kits, and information about health benefits of wheatgrass juice. The site wheatgrass.com explains that wheatgrass juice is an easy, inexpensive way to get two or three servings of green vegetables per day.
If more common plants are your preference, it’s also a great time to grow herbs or even start seedlings indoors. Jackie Clay, a writer at backwoodshome.com, reports that she’s started peppers, tomatoes, eggplant and even broccoli indoors. Earlier this month, Washington Post writer Adrian Higgins pointed out that starting seeds indoors makes economic sense, too—it’s cheaper than buying plants later, and growing one’s own vegetables and herbs definitely can reduce grocery bills.
Though some herbs need a lot of light, it’s possible to grow basil, rosemary, parsley and a variety of other herbs inside this winter, and, if you wish, move pots outdoors when weather gets warmer. Best of all, you can use the herbs you grow for year-round cooking,
gourmet style.
This winter, why not page through a few seed catalogs or browse a few sites like www.superseeds.com? You might get some great ideas, practice your gardening skills, and be well on your way to enjoying some tasty, good-for-you meals in the months to come!
