Apple introduced the Macintosh computer.
The average price of a new U.S. single-family house topped $101,000 in May, crossing the six-figure mark for the first time.
Astronauts Bruce McCandless II and Robert L. Stewart made the first untethered space walk.
Richard Petty won his 200th career NASCAR victory at the Firecracker 400 in Daytona Beach, FL.
